There's no excuse to be boring anymore

date:: Mar 7th, 2025

I'm 40 years old with a family (3 kids), demanding job, and other life responsibilities. It's hard to find time to for creative side projects.

The result is work that looks like this:

It's not that bad. I wrote the grassy demo at the top myself and it's cool. Everything else is boring and bland. Because I just don't have time to sit down and explore designs for it.

Yesterday after walking the kids to the bus stop I was staring at my boring site. I needed to go to work. But I hated how I wasn't getting to be creative.

I opened Cursor and decided to give it a shot. I opened up my CSS files, took screenshot of my site and attached it, and told it to redesign my site with a grunge chaotic feel. The exact prompt was just "I need you to design a new site for me. create an entirely new style. Make it wild and grunge".

It spit out some CSS that I stuck at the bottom of my CSS file and this is what I got:

In some ways, it didn't really do that much. I think AI tools are lot stupider than hype gives them credit for.

However, this got my brain running. The grassy effect looks much better on a dark background. It's overall an amazing upgrade. I can pick apart the pieces I like easily. The ability to explore a wide variety in the design space in a matter of seconds is incredible.

I feel like my creativity is unlocked. Even if I only have a few hours here and there, I can make significant progress in that timeframe. This just wasn't possible before.

Even if you have the time, it's hard for people to get past the creative block. They only repurpose what everyone else is doing. It's all boring landing pages with a black or white background and some fancy images.

There's no excuse to be boring anymore. AI is a tool to fuel your creative imagination in minutes. Anyone can do this. You might not be able to use it as effectively as a good designer, but at least you're not boring.

Just look at what http://pierre.co is doing. Their new landing page is insane. I saw tweet (can't find it anymore) that explained how they used AI to continually push the design further and further to the extreme.

This might be an extreme example (most products want a tamer version) but still -- don't be boring. There's no excuse anymore.
