Being a better steward of my projects

I haven’t been a good steward of my projects.

The two big ones in the last year are absurd-sql and Actual’s open-sourcing. I haven’t done anything on absurd-sql since last fall, and while I’ve kept in touch with Actual, working every few weeks isn’t near enough what it deserves.

This isn’t a pity post: I’m not sorry because I’ve been focusing on personal stuff instead of working overtime on tech. I also got promoted to Staff earlier this year at Stripe and I’ve been focusing on growing those skills. But I want to work more on these projects again, and for some reason writing this down and being explicit helps me mentally adjust.

A lot of people have done great work on these projects. You know who you are. Thanks for all the support and contributions.

Thank you for your patience; the Actual community has been especially patient and understanding.

Weekly notes

I’ve been thinking a lot about how I can be involved weekly even if I can’t code every single week.

The best thing I can do is just write. There’s a lot of complexity in Actual, as well as a lot of stuff going on in the community, and it would be good to continually dump my thoughts somewhere to explain everything and help guide the community.

As part of this new site, I’m starting a “weekly notes” section where I write down all of my thoughts at the end of the week. It’ll be orientated around what we got done that week and what should happen next week, but I’ll also treat it as a space to write any free form thoughts.

Here’s the first entry: 2022-07-08 Weekly notes: Actual and more

You can find all the weekly notes from the home page, but I’ll also post them on twitter and any relevant discord channels each week. I’ll also set up RSS in the future.
